UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize in Basic Sciences Seeks Applicants

In order to emphasize the crucial role of basic sciences in promoting innovation and sustainable development, UNESCO has been awarding the UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize in Basic Sciences since 2021. Named after D. I. Mendeleev, the founder of the periodic table, this prestigious award aims to encourage contributions from scientists working in the fields of chemistry, physics, mathematics, and biology to understand natural phenomena and drive global socio-economic progress.

Within this framework, two successful scientists who lead significant socio-economic transformations with groundbreaking discoveries and innovations are awarded annually. Prize winners receive a cash award of $250,000 in addition to a gold medal and certificate representing the award.

The UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize in Basic Sciences aims to highlight the importance of basic sciences in creating peaceful and prosperous societies and to support the transformative impact of scientific research on the common future of humanity.

Candidates for the award must be nominated by member states, civil society organizations, UNESCO Chairs, Category 2 Centers, international scientific unions, or universities, and personal applications are not accepted. Nomination applications must be completed online via a special template available on the official website by March 15, 2024.
