PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Major appointments in academic positions held with Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey (1978-1980), King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (1980-1989), and Marmara University, Istanbul, Turkey (1989-).

Teaching experience (in English) covering engineering orientation, materials science, chemical metallurgy, strength of materials, construction materials and concrete technology, soil mechanics, advanced concrete technology, and properties of concrete. Participated in the establishment and development of materials testing laboratories, has supervised teaching assistants and laboratory technicians in developing and conducting course-work experiments. Lectured professional engineers and industrialists in continuing education workshops. Supervised numerous senior project students and Engineering Management Masters Degree thesis work.

Research interests in characterization of porous solids, structure and properties of cement pastes and mortars, production and performance of concrete in hot climates.

Author of 23 refereed international journal and conference proceeding papers, discussions and abstracts. Reviewer for American Concrete Institute Materials Journal.

Industrial expertise as consultant to public sector institutions and industry on cement and concrete technology, glass and ceramics, materials performance, testing and characterization problems, total quality management and performance assurance.

Honors and distinctions include Appreciation of Service Award from King Abdulaziz University (l984), Young Scientist Encouragement Award from Turkish Scientific and Technical Research Council (l989) and President’s Award from Marmara University (1998).

As Vice-Dean of Engineering for Academic Affairs (1990-1993), organized the establishment of the academic infrastructure, curricula of the departments, configuration of the laboratories, service units and interdisciplinary centers of the Faculty of Engineering at Marmara University.

As Vice-President (1993-1996) responsible for the administration of business, finance and construction of Marmara University (the third largest university in Turkey, in l996, with 46,000 students, 2,400 academic staff in 14 faculties and 11 post-graduate institutions).

As the founding Chairman of the Department of Materials Engineering at Marmara University (1997-2003) started the undergraduate and graduate programs. Participated as Quality Council Member (1997-2000) in Total Quality Management implementation at Marmara University, Faculty of Engineering (Finalist, European Quality Award Public Sector Category in 2000).

Appointed as Vice President and Member of the Science Board (2003) of the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK).
